Brian Selznick & Mrs. Svec

What's new in the Piper Library

I had the honor and privilege to meet Author and Illustrator, Brian Selznick on October 3rd.   He is the Author of the book, The Invention of Hugo Cabret and now his new book Wonder Struck.  What a wonderful man he is, so very talented.  He came and sat at our table and talked to us about his work and the movie, Hugo Cabret. He signed a copy of his book to Piper School. The movie based on his book in coming out in November and he says it is true to the book.  He was very moved at the end of the movie and he wrote the ending.

I highly recommend his books and I cannot wait to see his movie. Come to the Library and check out his books.

Go to the JLG Section to see a quick review of his new book and Hugo Cabret.

Go to Links and Downloads to learn more about Brian Selznick.

Piper Tea Party

Pictured with me in the page picture above is Sarah Kelly in the middle and Camila and Veronica Hernandez. It was taken at our Tea Party at the end of last year. The children had tea and jelly sandwiches.  We read a book about a tea party and we sang I'm A Little Teapot.  We even had a recorder soloist, Rubin Ruiz come and play I'm A Little Teapot. All the Kindergartners and First graders had a wonderful time.  I can't wait to do it again and make it an annual event.

PARENT CHECK OUT we would still like to offer parent check out here at Piper School. Last year we only had 4 parents sign up. I hope to have more this year.  If you would like to be able to come and check out books please stop by the library Wed - Fri AM or Mon and Tue at 3:00 PM and sign up for a check out number to get started on checking out books. These could be books for your pleasure or to read to your child.  I also have books in Spanish.

This year we are Blasting Off with AR.  We already have a great start with over 50% of the student body haven taken a test already. If you are not familiar with AR it stands for Accelerated Reader and it is a system where the children take out a book and when they have read it they take a short quiz on it and get points for correct answers.  If they get 100% on a test the are entered in a raffle and also get a small prize. We will still have "Top Readers" for Accelerated Reading (AR) in each class is displayed on the AR bulletin board and on the website. I am so proud of them and they should be proud of themselves. Keep up the good work.

New Books come each month from the Junior Library Guild (JLG).  Check them out! Take a look at what's coming next .

This year we are testing a program for our kindergarten readers in Mrs. Gilbert and Ms. Sweeney's class, Raz Readers. With this program the child will read or be read too depending on the child's reading level, a short story and take a short 3 to 4 question test. It's very animated and fun for the children. They will also earn points and will move up in the ranks, right now they are all Ensigns, they can move to Lieutenant, Captain and so on.  We have a bulletin board set up for them so they and the rest of the school can see their progress.

My Raz readers will win a free book for every time they move up a level, just like our Lexia and Reading Plus students. This year we were awarded 2000 books to give away from First Books! These books cost us .35 cents each and a lot of them are hard copies.  I think we received a great variety this year, a little something for everyone.

This is starting out to be a great year!
